IDENTITY

Continuing in our ongoing series in Romans, this installment covers chapters 5, 6, and 7. In developing the series, Pastor Josh noted 3 themes that develop across the chapters we’ll be covering in this installment. These three themes were divided into titles for each chapter:

  • Chapter 5 – Justified

  • Chapter 6 – Freedom

  • Chapter 7 – Fight

Given the 3 chapters/themes and the reality that the series will span 12 weeks, the decision was made to create an identity for each chapter in order to avoid the monotony that can build across 12 weeks if just one identity is utilized. Heavy consideration was given to creating a continuity between all 3 identities so each feels as though it’s still a part of a Romans-based series. In doing so, the visual aesthetics of the color palette and graphic elements carry across all three identities.

TITLE

The series title ties in the typeface and color palette that’s used across all 3 chapters.

CHAPTERS

JUSTIFIED – CHAPTER 5

The term itself is legal in nature and thus carries with it the connotation of a sentence being rendered. In the case of the believer, God the Father renders us justified due to Christ’s atoning work on the cross. A hand rapping a gavel was utilized to illustrate the act of justification.

FREEDOM – CHAPTER 6

In being freed, most often people visualize some sense of captivity. In this application we utilize the breaking of shackles to illustrate the freedom we’re granted by Christ.

FIGHT – CHAPTER 7

This chapter focuses on the Law and our sin, and in our discovery discussion about the series, Pastor Josh brought forth the idea of waging a fight against sin. This felt a better option than simply titling this chapter “the Law.” In each previous chapter, there is an implied action being taken, and the action of fighting sin seemed a worthy title in this case.

Video Bumper Treatment

As is the case for the artwork, there would be three distinct bumpers for this series. Each would consist of motion graphics that would communicate the exchange taking us from our prior to state, to our state as we are found in Christ.
