(NOTE: Timestamps are for video version only.)

In this episode we are discussing Chapter 4 of Emotionally Healthy Discipleship by Peter Scazzero.

Pg 61 — Within the church, to Americanize Jesus is to follow him because he makes my life better and more enjoyable….The challenge is that most of us are so immersed in Western culture, if not American culture, that it’s hard for us to recognize how Americanized our view of Jesus really is.) (1:45)

Pg 62 — Being Christ-centered but not cross-centered. (9:30)

Pg 65 — The world’s discipleship vs Jesus’ discipleship (15:30)

  • Be popular vs reject popularity
  • Pg 69 — Be great vs reject great-ism.
  • Pg 73— Be successful vs reject success-sim.
  • Pg 75 — Avoid suffering and failure vs embrace suffering and failure

Final Thought (38:05)

  • Following the crucified Jesus:
  • Pg 79 — 1) Trust him —- Jesus invites us to trust him 98 times in the gospel of John alone. “Relaxing in” is a good modern translation of “trusting” or “believing in.”
  • Pg 81 — 2) Detach for Jesus — Basically, stop attaching yourself to earthly definitions of success and attach yourself to Christ’s will. Inputs (we’re responsible for). Outputs (God is responsible for). Don’t confuse the two.
